Handel - Opera: "Julius Caesar" ("Va tacito") Dame Janet Baker. HD
AI-enhanced to HD.
Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Julius Caesar in Egypt, HWV 17), commonly known simply as Giulio Cesare, is an Italian opera in three acts written for the Royal Academy of Music by George Frideric Handel in 1724.
This is an English version, staged (sumptiously) for TV in 1985 by the English National Opera under Sir Charles Mackerras. In this clip, the marvellous, beautiful Dame Janet Baker (Mezzo Soprano - as Caesar) sings the Aria "How silently..." - in Italian "Va tacito e nascosto". It has always been one of my favourite Handel Arias, and Dame Janet sings, as well as acts this part most memorably, alongside an extensive solo natural horn obbligato - the predecessor to the modern-day (French) horn.

M. R. James's work as a medievalist and scholar is still highly regarded, but he is best remembered for his ghost stories, which some consider among the best in the genre. He redefined the ghost story for the new century by abandoning many of the formal Gothic clichés of his predecessors and using more realistic contemporary settings. Because his protagonists and plots tend to reflect his own a...

Replace Turkey with Ukraine, perhaps add a few rainbow flags and this would work excellently as a contemporary propaganda parody.

Lovely poem, shame about the unnecessary music. Yes, I know that JB (on his own admission, incidentally, ‘not very musical’) approved. It’s still saccharine rubbish.

Henry VIII destroyed St. Thomas Becket’s remains and shrine which had been known for it’s healing properties. Henry’s 400 lbs body resides in the crypto directly beneath the nave’s floor in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. You wonder which judgement he received from the Lord in final Judgement.

Across the evening sky All the birds are leaving But how can they know It's time for them to go? Before the winter fire I will still be dreaming I have no thought of time For who knows where the time goes? Who knows where the time goes? Sad, deserted shore Your fickle friends are leaving Ah, but then you know It's time for them to go But I will still be here I have no thought of leaving I do not count the time For who knows where the time goes? Who knows where the time goes? And I am not alone While my love is near me I know it will be so Until it's time to go So come the storms of winter And then the birds in spring again I have no fear of time For who knows how my love grows? And who knows where the time goes?

i’m an incoming conservatory freshman who loves singing pieces like this as well as other styles of music, especially those pioneered by people of color (like rock music). i really wish all styles of music were more accessible to sing, compose, and in this case fuse together! sure, if i sung this for my vocal professor the way buckley did i’d be told that i’m not using the correct techniques to emulate a european baroque-era style but i still think this is fucking awesome. buckley is singing it with the correct techniques to emulate his own style, and i think that’s rad.

It holds up very well. The best? I don't think there's any consensus on that. Kyril Gerstein's is absolutely marvelous; so is Scarpini, Donahoe, David Lively (and Gielen.) All live performances by the way. And then Ohlsson and Hamelin. There's a lot of top-notch competition already. But Ogdon's was the first, at least in the modern era.

I'm sure many have seen the irony of this video. Here we listen to the music of a Lutheran composer and yet the images used are all Catholic! This Truth makes it's presence known. Always wondered why he never became Catholic and yet Bach witnesses to the 2000 years of truth of the One church founded in and by Christ.
